Why Focusing On The Present May Be The Cure For Letting Go of Your Past

By Manuela Domingos

Being able to let go of an aspect of your past is probably one of the hardest things to do. Especially if that past affected you somehow, built you somehow, or tore you down somehow.

It’s always going to be there. It’s going to show up during the oddest hours. It’s going to creep into your thoughts when you least expect it, when you’re doing the most ordinary things of your life.

When you’re at a red light, about to turn right, you’re going to wonder why you’re even thinking about the one time you were in the area and why you were there in the first place.

When you’re falling asleep, those past memories will cross your mind.

Somehow, it will always show up. It will knock on your thoughts and you will reluctantly open the door and you will listen.

Perhaps it’s time to let it go.

There comes a point where being stuck in your past is like being stuck in fresh new cemented ground.

Be in the present. Enjoy the good moments, reminisce on them if you wish. Recognize the good moments before they turned bad as well. But don’t dwell on the negative things of your past.

It will mold you into something you wish you never had to become. I’ll turn you into a version of yourself you no longer recognize.

Breathe.

You are not your past. You are not the moment that impacted you somehow in a negative way. Rather, you are capable of good things.

“Learn from the mistakes, chew on all aspects that are important, and live.”

You can only be stronger once you learn to look forward.
